Dr Fierce's Data Lair

Too many questions...

I've been asked to many questions today.

I want to ask questions to see if someone can read my mind. Hmmm... Whom to ask? I know, let's ask Darth Vader.

Darth's a pretty amazing guy. Plays Jeopardy as well, yup.

Where did the time go?

Well, time didn't go anywhere, it's a figure of speech.

However, it's the end of another day here at DrFierce's data lair and it's unreal to see how fast time has flown by.

Looking at the clock on the wall, it doesn't appear that there is a quantum malfunction in the universe that is making time go any faster.

Nonetheless, there's this feeling that much more would've been accomplished if time had been better spent and that it'd be real cool if there was somehow a way to go back in time...

At the end of a wet, dreary, stormy kind of day...

It's been a long, dreary, rainy, wet, stormy kind of day.

Here at DrFierce's data lair, we like to unwind by listening to a little bit of Internet radio, whether Canadian or from around the world.

Heck, sometimes we don't want to listen to radio, but to streamed music.

And sometimes we definitively want more.

But of course, we should be polite to coworkers, friends and family, so we should always wear some headphones.

Video Game Ads Archive...

Simply the Best^h^h^h^hWorst

Here are DrFierce's data lair, we honestly find train wrecks sad when they occur.

Well, what is really sad is arriving after one has occurred and to only be witness to the aftermath of what has occurred.

However, sometimes, just sometimes, you're given an opportunity to see a train wreck in progress and while you want to look away, your eyes are rivetted to what is happening, not believing what you are hearing and seeing.

If you're wondering what you witnessed via the last link (or will be witnessing if you are cautious and don't click ill-advisedly on just any link), this is a group of American Idol rejects signing at half time of some sport event. It's so bad it's funny, specially looking at the disco/funk moves the guy in the white shirt does when he tries to impress the audience and does his spin move.

Yup. Amen for American television and specially American sports (because, heh, nothing is more American than soccer) for providing us with such a memorable moment.

The Pit

Yeah. You read right. The pit.

More Fun with Google

How do you measure innovation?

It's difficult to tell, some say it's how many new things someone or some company can come up with.

Some say it's how someone or some company can take old things and make them new again with a different spin put on them.

Choose your definition and feel free to debate which companies innovate and which perhaps, despite what they say, do not.

DrFierce cares not about such things.

What DrFierce cares about is cool stuff (see my first post, it's the reason this blog exists) and nothing seems cooler, from a Web perspective than what you can do with services and facilities provided by Google.

Building upon Google maps, there are plenty of services and sites that have sprung up.

Some notable examples include checking the crime rate in Chicago, Sightseeing the world thanks to Google. looking up places for cheap gas for your car, motorcycle or alternate vehicle, as well as checking out which places are for sale and for what price.

If this is not enough, you can create a montage of images based on the Google image search function. Sometimes, it comes up with interesting findings.

Overall, there is plenty to do, see and have fun with Google. What is really interesting is what their labs are coming up with.

Now excuse me, I've got, uhm, work to do.

And, uhm, yeah, by the looks of all this above, there's a possibility that there might not be a post tomorrow.

At the end of another busy day...

Another ridiculously busy day.

Time to unwind with a relaxing game.....

...wait, no, that's not relaxing.

Ah, this is a relaxing game...

...wait, that's not @#%& relaxing, I can't get the @#%& ball in the @#%& hole.

Ah, nuts. Ok. Forget it. I'll just go and watch a demented cartoon or two to help escape reality.

Where's Yesterday's Post?

There wasn't any entry for yesterday, sunday.

Yeah. it's true.

It is indeed awful, calamitous, disastrous, disgraceful, dishonorable, disreputable, distressing, dolorous, dreadful, execrable, god-awful, grievous, grim, heartbreaking, heartrending, horrifying, intolerable, lamentable, lousy, miserable, mournful, opprobrious, pitiable, poor, regrettable, reprehensible, sad, scandalous, sickening, terrible, tragic, unbearable, unsatisfactory, woeful and yeah, even wretched.

It's actually Google's fault.

No, no, I'm not making this up.

It's really Google's fault.

<-- Timewaster Alert: Don't read below this line if you can't control yourself... -->

As you know, you can have a virtual World on your PC, where you can zoom in and see things from afar or close. But it requires a lot of processing power power and data must be fed from the Web, so you need a fast Internet connection.

But now Google went and up'ed the ante with a new service called Google Maps.

Ok, ok, there was something like that before. Even for driving directions.

But what'll knock your socks is the "Satellite" option.

You can zoom in and see the actual colour of the car parked in front of your house when the satellite image was captured.

There are maps of virtually anywhere... Well, in North America. So much for seeing what Gstaad looks like.

Thank God, otherwise this post would've been published next year.

You've been warned...

Game Consoles

Ok. I'm going to talk about this once and only once.

Then we're done. For Good.

I'm not even going to go back to the dark ages of home video consoles or even back to the generation or two after that, as these ages were not significantly any less dark.

I must admit, Atari tried to keep their platform alive with incremental improvements, but few remember those or even knew they existed.

If you ask most people what they consider "names" in the video console market, you'd get what I'd call the top four. You'd get (in no particular order): Nintendo. Sega, Sony and Microsoft.

Now don't you be asking what DrFierce thinks about all these consoles. He'll tell you he doesn't have any preference, to be quite honest, specially with all sorts of things that are readily available for free.

But I digress...

With Nintendo, there was the Nintendo Entertainment System (a.k.a., NES), followed by the Nintendo Super Nintendo Entertainment System (a.k.a., SNES), then the Nintendo 64, then the Nintendo GameCube and soon, there will be the Nintendo Compact Console.

With Sega, there was Sega Genesis followed by the Sega Saturn and then the Sega Dreamcast.

With Sony, there was the PlayStation (a.k.a., PS, PSX or PSOne), Sony PlayStation 2 (a.k.a., PS2, which comes also in a slim version) and soon there will be the Sony PlayStation 3 (a.k.a., PS3)

With Microsoft, there is the XBox and there will be the XBox 360.

But that's not all. Those are the consoles that make you stay at home and park your butt in front of the TV. If you're one of those outdoorsy, atheletic types, there are the handheld consoles.

With Nintendo, you had the Nintendo Game Boy, followed by the Nintendo Game Boy Color, then the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP and now you have the newly-released Nintendo DS (a.k.a., DS -- and Nintendo is supposedly disowning it being par of the Game Boy lineage) and for those who might've forgotten, there was the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

With Sony, well, you have the Sony PlayStation Portable (a.k.a., PSP). I don't have one. It's perhaps because I drool too much when I'm close to one.

With all those choices and all the commercials I being pummelled with, no wonder I wind up seeing consoles everywhere...

Urban Legends

Gather up. We'll discuss something that gets on DrFierce's nerves. Well, it only gets on my nerves when I get the stuff in my inbox.

Again, let me remind you that if you do not know my official e-mail address, then you'll just have to work harder to get into the inner circle.

Where was I? Oh yeah. Urban Legends.

I heard this story today and it screams URBAN LEGEND!!! But I can't seem to find out whether it's real or not. So judge for yourself.

This mom goes to this resort hotel with her two kids for the day. She meets up with another mom who also has two kids. They go to the resort because there's a place where the kids can play and be monitored and they can catch up while sipping a Kir Royal.

After a couple of hours and a couples of Kirs, they round up the kids and head back home.

One of the moms gets stopped at a police road check and is asked if she drank anything.

"Why, of course, I was with my friend and had two Kirs Royal".

So the police officer pulls and sobriety tester and asks her to blow in it. Which she does and it says: "0.09", which is over the legal limit.

The mother, indignant, says: "This is impossible! This thing must be broken!" So the police officer resets the device, gets another tube and gets her to do the test again and it says: "0.09", which is over the legal limit.

The mother is even more upset and says: "This thing doesn't work. Bet it'll say the same thing if you try it on my kid!"

So the police officer resets the device, gets another tube and gets the oldest kid to do the test and it says: "0.09", which is over the legal limit.

The police officer then apologizes and admits that the machine is defective and lets the lady go along.

As the woman arrives home, she gets a call from the other mom who says: "Are your kids sick? Mine are. When the monitor took a short break, they snuck in the bar and finished all the drinks..."

Yeah, it's gotta be an urban legend...

At the end of a busy day...

Pfff... I've been super busy today. I think I'll take a moment to change my mind...

2005-06-01

First Post

Yeah, I went and decided to create a blog on the Internet. I know. Nothing new there, there are thousands of blogs on the Internet and these numbers keep growing.

If you think you'll be able to know what I was doing at 8:32 am on a Monday and whether it was raining wherever in the world I am, then take a hike. None of that crap on *this* blog.

Dr Fierce's life is a black box where only a selected few are able to peek in. If you've had that privilege, welcome to the club. If you haven't, you will simply have to work harder at currying my favours.

Seriously, this blog is simply to share the cool stuff I come across every day. Instead of sending e-mails around, I'll just post this here. If you've got cool stuff to share, feel free to add to the posting. Knowledge is wealth, so share the wealth.

Let's start small today. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's a few thousand words...
